Overview
Zimbabwe’s power stations were built in the 1950s and designed for a much smaller population, than the current 12.5 million. Little capacity has been added since and current capacity is around 1,200 megawatts (MW) including imports, but the need is up to 2,200 MW. Even with major investment in power generation capacity, this could be raised to 1650 MW which would take several years to materialise. According to the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA), demand will soon reach an estimated 3,000 MW at current GDP growth rates of 8%.
The upshot of this power deficit is severe load-shedding, or in plain English – power cuts, to ease network pressure. Almost daily Zimbabwe’s urban population (approximately 4 million people) experience blackouts affecting people’s every day activities including shopping, school homework, charging of mobile phones or even guests coming for dinner. Tough Stuff International has sold over half a million units in 2010 across Africa.
